As I'm attempting to grow, and perhaps one day harvest my own poppies, what better time than to make some delicious savoury poppy seed biscuits.
They're wonderfully buttery and crisp - just the thing for a mid-afternoon snack. Plus, I've made these with half plain white and half wholemeal flour to increase the fibre so you needn't feel guilty about eating them either. Well, if you don't polish them off all in one go that is - they're rather moreish!
Don't forget, even a little portion of poppy seeds can be nutritionally beneficial. Rich in niacin and folate, poppy seeds contain measurable amounts of calcium, iron and zinc. Even one teaspoon will add to your daily mineral intake so eat away!
Ingredients
For the biscuits
180g plain flour
180g wholemeal flour
75g unsalted butter (softened)
1/2 tsp salt
1 egg
a splash of water
1 tbs poppy seeds
Method
1 - Mix the flours, butter, egg and salt together in a bowl until it makes a nice smooth dough.
2 - Add the poppy seeds and knead together on a floured surface.
3 - Roll out the dough to approximately 3mm thick.
4 - Cut out the biscuits, placing each one on a floured baking sheet.
5 - Bake at 200 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
6 - Take the biscuits out of the oven and place on cooling racks.
These buttery biscuits are delicious with a tangy chutney.
Enjoy!
