OUTDOORS | Sunshine, ruins and English Heritage pt. 2

It's amazing how quickly the weather can change. On the second half of our English Heritage tour just after Christmas, the day's crystal clear blue skies soon transformed to murk and mist as the afternoon crept on.

Still, we managed to stake out a few more interesting sights while the sunshine still shone. And, if anything the fog that transcended only served to make our last stop of the day more atmospheric.

Below: Wilton Windmill

Below: Chisbury Chapel, English Heritage

While Wilton Windmill isn't technically an English Heritage property, it was on our route to our next planned stop so we thought we'd take a look. It was well worth it. Unlike other windmills, Wilton still produces flour! And is open to the public on particular days. It wasn't open the day of our visit but we were still able to get up close to check it out.

Our next stop was Chisbury Chapel, a 13th century chapel, which later became a barn after the Reformation. It's now open and completely free to visit (like many of the English Heritage properties).

Although the building is a shell of its former life as a place of worship, it retains some of its original features, including a red cross painted on the wall during building's consecration ceremony, marking its religious status.

Wherever you are in the country, what my heritage tour proved if anything is that there are so many sites, ruins and buildings enshrouded in history, waiting to be explored. Whatever the weather!
